Hot Dog

It's been a hot day in the Jolliman office and our part time office dog, Guinness, has been feeling the heat. That must make him a hot dog!?

Poor Guinness!

SNot To Be Overlooked!

Thanks to changing fashions, and the invention of paper tissues, the handkerchief has slowly fallen from grace over the years. Once a useful item, it is now most often used for decorative purposes.

There was a time however when handkerchiefs were a very handy item indeed which had multiple uses such as a flirtation device for amorous ladies, to transport and store food, to protect the ears and neck from the cold, and as a substitute for a bandage or sling to name a few.

They have also become synonymous with the British seaside stereotype of makeshift knotted sun hats - made famous by Monty Python's Grumbys [pictured].

Thought to have been the invention of King Richard II of England (1377-1399), they were once a personal hygiene essential - but have now been overshadowed by the more hygienic disposable hanky. Hygienic or not, there's no denying that they're a more environmentally friendly choice as they can be washed and reused.

Although not the essential accessory they once were - nothing looks smarter than the tip of a clean, cotton handkerchief peeping out from a breast pocket of a suit jacket.

And although Michael Palin may be able to rock the knotted hanky look - we recommend a Cotton Sun Hat to keep you looking and feeling cool when the heat is on!

Andy Does It (H)at Last!

Well done to Andy Murray on his victory at Wimbledon yesterday.

Looking at all of the media coverage, we couldn't help but notice one particular similarity between the spectators at yesterday's triumph and those watching Fred Perry's 1936 win.

There may be 77 years between the events - and times certainly have changed a lot since then - but one thing is for sure. Panama Hats are still as popular as ever!

Sign Of The Times

Our yellow and green Jolliman Shop is a bit of a landmark in Worthing, West Sussex. So it may be a bit of a surprise to our regulars this week when they see that we've had a facelift - and gone burgundy!

But nothing goes to waste. Our old yellow and green sign stood the test of time well, and has been taken to Jolliman HQ to be kept safely in the archive.
